Walk Through a Garden of Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants

Host • Raga Svara: Ayurveda & Wellness Retreats

Walk Through a Garden of Ayurvedic Medicinal Plants

Walk through a garden where medicinal plants used in Ayurvedic practice grow in close clusters across the space. Identify herbs like Brahmi, Ashwagandha and Moringa as you move along the paths, with each plant tied to a specific use.

The layout connects directly to the treatments and food prepared on site, linking what you experience to its source. The setting feels grounded and functional rather than ornamental, with the garden maintained as part of everyday use. It offers a clearer sense of how these ingredients exist beyond prepared form.

Meet the Ayurveda Doctor Who Reads Your Prakriti

Host • Raga Svara: Ayurveda & Wellness Retreats

Meet the Ayurveda Doctor Who Reads Your Prakriti

Before any therapy, you'll sit with the resident Ayurveda doctor, and the first thing they try to read is your prakriti — your constitution. The idea, old as the classical Ayurvedic texts, is that everyone is born with a particular balance of three forces, called doshas: vata, pitta and kapha, loosely the qualities of air, fire and water in the body.

Yours is a fixed signature, unlike anyone else’s, and it decides what will settle you and what will unbalance you. So there is no standard programme here. The doctor takes your pulse, asks about sleep, appetite, temperament, and builds the rest of your stay — the oils, the food, the pace — around the particular person you turn out to be.

Immerse in a Calm Guided Meditation at Bodhi

Host • Raga Svara: Ayurveda & Wellness Retreats

Immerse in a Calm Guided Meditation at Bodhi

As your first day softens into evening, you're led into Bodhi, a space built specifically for quiet. Here, under the guidance of Raga Svara's Yoga Guru, you'll settle into a guided meditation designed to do one thing well: calm an overstimulated nervous system. After a day of travel and a first, personal encounter with the retreat's Ayurvedic philosophy, this session offers a place to simply be still.

The practice is gentle and accessible, no prior meditation experience required, just an invitation to anchor your awareness in the present moment. Bodhi's architecture itself supports the work, minimal, quiet, and deliberately free of distraction. By the time the session ends, the noise of arrival, travel, and transition has largely dissolved, leaving something closer to real rest. It's a fitting close to Day One, the moment the retreat's promise of stillness starts to feel less like an idea and more like something you're actually living.

Discover the Yoga of Body, Breath and Mind

Host • Raga Svara: Ayurveda & Wellness Retreats

Discover the Yoga of Body, Breath and Mind

Yoga, in the West, has come to mean the postures. In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, compiled some two thousand years ago, the postures are only one of eight limbs — the word itself comes from yuj, to yoke, to join. Your days here move through several of those limbs by name.

You'll practise asana, the physical postures, in the morning at Antara. You'll also sit in dhyana, meditation, at a space called Bodhi — ‘awakening’. And you take an hour of swadhyaya, self study, in the Anahata library, named for the heart’s ‘unstruck sound’, the note that sounds without anything striking. Different rooms, one old idea: that the body, the breath and the mind are worked as parts of a single thing.

Experience Shirodhara, Ayurveda’s Signature Oil Ritual

Host • Raga Svara: Ayurveda & Wellness Retreats

Experience Shirodhara, Ayurveda’s Signature Oil Ritual

The signature therapy has a plain Sanskrit name: shirodhara, from shiro, the head, and dhara, a stream. You'll lie down, and a fine, unbroken thread of warm oil is poured onto your forehead, just above the brow, and kept flowing there — the same slow pour, for a long time. It is a strange, particular sensation, and most people find their thoughts go quiet somewhere in it.

Earlier there’s abhyanga, a full-body massage worked with warm oil by two therapists at once. The doctor chooses the oils for you, not off a menu. Ayurveda holds that a body is steadied through the skin as much as the stomach; whatever you make of the theory, the hour itself does something.

Discover Dinacharya, the Routine Behind Ayurvedic Living

Host • Raga Svara: Ayurveda & Wellness Retreats

Discover Dinacharya, the Routine Behind Ayurvedic Living

One evening, the doctor sits you down not for a treatment but for a lesson — in dinacharya, literally ‘day-conduct’, the daily routine the old Ayurvedic texts lay out. The premise is that health is built less by big interventions than by small things done at the right hour: rising before the sun, scraping the tongue, drinking warm water, eating the main meal at midday when digestion is said to be strongest, winding down as the light goes.

It maps a day onto the body’s own clock. This is the part of the stay meant to leave with you — not the oils or the setting, which stay here, but a handful of habits small enough to keep once you’re home.

Start the Day with Shatkarma and Barefoot Walking

Host • Raga Svara: Ayurveda & Wellness Retreats

Start the Day with Shatkarma and Barefoot Walking

The classical yoga texts open not with postures but with shatkarma — six cleansing acts — and the Gheranda Samhita calls the body a ghata, a clay pot, this first work its scouring: clean the vessel before you fill it. In gentle form that might be neti, rinsing the nasal passages, or trataka, steady gazing at a flame to settle the mind.

Then you'll go outside and walk, slowly and barefoot, across grass and stone and packed earth, feeling the ground change under your feet. After the inward cleaning, the plain outward fact of the earth. A way of arriving in the day rather than lurching into it.

Cook with What’s Growing Around Raga Svara’s Garden

Host • Raga Svara: Ayurveda & Wellness Retreats

Cook with What’s Growing Around Raga Svara’s Garden

Indian tradition counts not four seasons but six — vasanta, grishma, varsha, sharad, hemanta, shishira, spring through winter — and Ayurveda has a whole discipline, ritucharya, for eating differently in each, because what suits the body in the monsoon won’t in high summer. You'll see the principle at its simplest in the garden.

You'll walk the beds with the chef and the resident botanist, picking whatever the season is actually giving that week, and carry it to the kitchen to turn into soups and salads while you watch. Nothing arrives from far away or out of its time. It’s less a cooking class than a small argument for eating what grows around you, when it grows.

Spot Winter Migrant Birds from Siberia and Central Asia

Host • Raga Svara: Ayurveda & Wellness Retreats

Spot Winter Migrant Birds from Siberia and Central Asia

Many of the birds you’ll see on this walk didn’t grew up in India. Gujarat sits on the Central Asian Flyway, one of the great migration routes, and every winter millions of birds come down from Siberia and Central Asia to this side of India.

The grounds are designed to hold some of that life rather than push it out - gardens, water, trees left as habitat. You'll go round with the resident naturalist, a co-founder, learning to tell one call from another. Late autumn to late winter is the season for it, and it's also the time when the retreat is at its best.

Discover Raga Svara’s Indian Classical Musical Story

Host • Raga Svara: Ayurveda & Wellness Retreats

Discover Raga Svara’s Indian Classical Musical Story

The name of the property itself reflects the idea. In Indian classical music, a svara is a single note — the word comes from a root meaning ‘to sound’, and the old texts call it ‘that which shines by itself’ — and a raga is the mode built from those notes, the frame a melody lives inside. Raga Svara is named for both: the note and the whole.

You'll arrive in Kasturbadham, a village near Rajkot that carries the name of Kasturba Gandhi, once held here for leading a satyagraha. A cotton Suti Mala goes around your neck, a cool drink into your hand. The rest of the stay is, in a sense, tuning, i.e., bringing a life back into key.
