Sri Lanka’s hill country has been a tea region since the 1860s, when British colonial planters converted coffee estates lost to a leaf-rust epidemic into tea cultivation, with labour brought from South India to do the work. Dunkeld Tea Factory is one of the working factories on the Bogawantalawa Valley estates, much of its original machinery still in use — withering troughs, rolling drums, fermenting beds, drying chambers — and the production process largely unchanged for a century and a half. The tour is led by the resident planter, who walks the manufacturing logic from leaf to cup. The tea is what built the landscape you arrived through.

The walk up from Dunkeld Bungalow follows a trail through the tea fields and forest to a picnic spot on the ridge above, where the land opens out across Castlereagh Lake and the tea-carpeted ranges that climb beyond it. The picnic is laid in steel tiffin boxes — Relais & Châteaux food in working containers — under shade, on a checked cloth. Wine, beer, or tea, depending on what the day asks for. The ridge gets afternoon mist most days, which is part of the texture of the hill country. You can walk back or be driven down.

Castlereagh Lake is a reservoir formed by the Castlereagh Dam, built in 1956 on the Kehelgamu Oya river as part of Sri Lanka’s hydroelectric system, and now central to the landscape of the surrounding tea estates. The morning kayak goes out at first light, before the wind picks up, when the mist is still on the water and the tea-carpeted ridges around it are just emerging from cloud. Hi-spec two-person kayaks; a guide follows for safety. The lake is still enough that an hour out and back is unhurried. Bring a layer — the hill country runs colder than the coast.

Sri Lanka’s hill country is more biodiverse than the tea-uniform landscape suggests — the plantations are interspersed with patches of montane forest that hold endemic shrub frogs and lizards, dozens of bird species (the blue magpie, the yellow-eared bulbul, the whistling thrush all endemic), purple-faced langurs in the canopy, and occasional leopards moving between forest fragments. A guided walk with a Tea Trails naturalist takes you through estate paths, into forest patches, past colonial-era ruins, with the naturalist reading both the natural and the agricultural landscape. A full-day version connects all five Tea Trails bungalows on foot or by bicycle, with tea at each.

The Castlereagh Cruise is a one-hour boat outing on the reservoir, optionally extended with a full breakfast or lunch on board prepared by the bungalow kitchen and a bottle of wine to match. The boat goes slowly past the tea-planted shoreline, with the misty ridges rising on every side and the Castlereagh Dam visible at the far end. Morning gives the best light and the clearest water; afternoon shifts to mist and the working tea pickers visible high on the slopes. The lake is the centre of the estate’s geography. Reading it from the water is the way to understand it.

Taste Ceylon’s Teas with the Resident Planter

The Private Tea Tasting goes deeper than the factory tour: instead of an overview of how tea is made, the resident planter walks you through how to read a cup. Six to ten teas are laid out — green, white, oolong, three or four grades of black, sometimes a flavoured one — taken through on dry leaf, infused leaf, infusion colour, and tasting. You learn to identify how altitude, weather, plucking standard and processing show up in the cup. The session runs an hour. A printed copy of “The Planters and The Bungalows,” the estate’s tea history book, comes with it.
