Neeralaya is built the old Himalayan way, in a style called Kath Kuni: dry stone and deodar cedar stacked in alternating layers, locked at the corners with wooden pegs, no mortar and no nails. The trick is the timber — when the ground shakes, the wood flexes just enough to absorb the shock, then settles back. It’s why these houses stood after the great Kangra earthquake of 1905. The craft had nearly died out, so the founder tracked down the last builders who still knew it. They set the villas among the old walnut trees and river boulders without moving one of them. You arrive into a house that belongs exactly where it stands.
Apples aren’t native to these hills — this valley is where they started in India. The first were planted near here in 1870, English varieties too tart to catch on, and only when an American brought sweet Red Delicious to the range in 1916 did the fruit take, and remake the state’s economy. The orchard you climb to this morning descends from that century-old experiment. The path runs through a village and past a hill shrine, shaded by pine and Himalayan oak, steep at first, then easy. At the top, your guide talks you through the varieties, lunch comes out among the trees, and the Bara Bhangal and Pir Panjal ranges open out ahead.

Linger in Manali, Where the World Began Again
Manali takes its name from Manu-alaya, the home of Manu — the figure Hindu myth remembers as the flood’s one survivor, who stepped off his boat here and set about starting the human race over. A temple in Old Manali marks the spot. The town the myth left behind is, these days, a place of narrow café lanes, and you come for a slower reason: a long lunch. At 2,050 metres, ringed by orchards and pine, Manali grew a café culture out of the travellers who drifted up here decades ago. Martin’s is the pick — a European-leaning menu, a good view, and a table you won’t be in any hurry to leave before the drive back.
The pools you’ll sit in are colder than they look, and there’s a reason. This water fell as snow on the high ranges you saw from the orchard, and it hasn’t warmed much since — it comes off the peaks and through the rock straight into these hollows, carrying the fine pale grit the mountains shed, turning the water that clear, mineral green. A short, easy walk from a twenty-minute drive brings you to the fall, tucked into a small hamlet most people never find. Then the good part: you lower yourself into the stream and the Neeralaya team serves lunch to you there, plates balanced, while you sit half-in, half-out of the emerald water.
