About The Journey

Dev Shree Deogarh is a family home in the truest sense, where Rajasthan's heritage is not simply preserved in its architecture but continues through the people, food and traditions of everyday life. Built by the Deogarh family from local stone and crafted by artisans from the region, the house sits above Ragho Sagar Lake amid the Aravallis, with the family living on the property and welcoming guests into their world. In the 1700s, when the painters’ workshops in the Mewar capital at Udaipur grew crowded, a few. artists went looking for their own patrons — and some came here, to the hill estate of Deogarh, and founded a style of their own. You can follow it through one family: Bagta, then his son Chokha, then Chokha’s son Baijnath, painting darbars and hunts and Krishna in the bold yellows and greens that mark Deogarh work apart. Their frescoes still run along the walls of the fort-palace above you. Devshree sits within that same royal heritage, at the old meeting-point of Mewar, Marwar and Merwara. You arrive to the traditional welcome of a house that, quite literally, painted its own world.

Two rival kingdoms built this railway, each from its own side. The Maharana of Mewar laid the track up from Udaipur’s direction, the Maharaja of Marwar down from Jodhpur’s, and they met at Phulad — where, before Independence, passengers had to step off one kingdom’s train and onto the other’s to carry on. You board the meter-gauge carriage at Phulad and climb the steep ghat section toward Kamli Ghat: twenty-odd kilometres through two century-old tunnels and something like 172 bridges thrown over streams and gorges. The Aravallis close in, green and forested, waterfalls in the monsoon — the far side of Rajasthan from the desert most people picture. A slow train through the seam between two old kingdoms.

Deogarh sits on an old seam of Rajasthan, where three regions once met — Mewar, Marwar and Merwara. That borderland is what you drive out into by open jeep this evening: farms worked much as they always have, and the Bhil villages that ring the town, whose year still turns on their own festivals and fields. The plateau runs cooler and greener than the Rajasthan of the plains, a little over two thousand feet up. You end at a lake as the sun drops, tea and a drink laid out at the water’s edge, the light going long across the fields you’ve just crossed. No fort today — just the country the forts were built to hold.

Stand Among 1,444 Pillars, No Two Alike

The story goes that a merchant named Dharna Shah dreamt of a celestial flying chariot, and spent the rest of his life trying to build it in marble. He found an architect, Depa, who could translate the dream, and Rana Kumbha, the Mewar king, who gave the land — which is why the temple and its town carry the Rana’s name. What they raised is one white marble hall held up by 1,444 carved pillars, and the marvel is that no two are alike. They’re set so cleverly that from any corner your eye still finds the four-faced image of Adinath at the centre, facing out in every direction at once. Five centuries on, the carving hasn’t dulled.

Climb the Fort That Sheltered a Dynasty

When Chittorgarh fell or looked like falling, this is where Mewar’s rulers ran. Kumbhalgarh was never taken by force. The one time it was breached, in 1578, the attackers had to poison and cut off its water rather than break the walls. Those walls run thirty-six kilometres over thirteen Aravalli peaks, the second-longest unbroken rampart on Earth after the Great Wall of China. Inside, the fort kept the dynasty alive: the infant prince who would grow up to found Udaipur was hidden here, and Maharana Pratap was born within these gates. You climb to it as your fort for the day. It reads less like a monument than a place that saved a line of kings.

Chittorgarh is the largest fort in India — a fortified city on a hill, with thirteen kilometres of wall, and Mewar’s capital for centuries. At its heart Rana Kumbha raised the Vijay Stambha around 1448: a nine-storey tower, carved top to bottom, built for no purpose but to announce a single victory over the Sultan of Malwa. It still stands exactly as he left it, visible for miles. The fort was besieged three times and, each time, its people chose defiance over surrender. When Akbar finally took it in 1568, Mewar gave it up and built a new capital at Udaipur — so Chittor is now more monument than living city, its palaces open to the sky.

Stop at the Pass Where Mewar Was Won Back

Break the drive home at a narrow Aravalli pass called Dewair, and a guide will tell you what happened here in 1582. Six years earlier, at Haldighati, Maharana Pratap had fought Akbar’s army to a draw and slipped into the hills to wage a long guerrilla war. On a Dussehra morning he came down on the Mughal outpost that held this pass — the gateway into Mewar — and broke it. Within a short campaign, thirty-six Mughal posts fell and most of the kingdom was back in his hands. A British colonel later gave Mewar its own classical pairing: if Haldighati was its Thermopylae, Dewair was its Marathon — the stand, and then the victory. A fitting last stop before the airport.
